Maker’s Spotlight: What Abbey Made

The absolute highlight of being a sewing pattern designer is seeing how my patterns are interpreted - the fabrics you use, the hacks you do and how you style your finished garments. You’re very inspiring! Abbey lives in Florida and has made some incredity cute versions of my patterns. I asked her a few questions about how she got into sewing and what inspires her.

How did you get into sewing?

Years ago, I wanted a very specific costume from a movie for Halloween. I bought a machine and taught myself on that dress, made a few more costumes, then put sewing aside for a bit. Last fall, I had an urge to make a dress for everyday wear. And I’ve been expanding my memade wardrobe ever since.

What was the first garment you made?

The first garment I ever made was a replica of the dancers’ costume in Captain America: The First Avenger. I even made a sequin pillbox hat! My first garment I made for my personal wardrobe was the Stitch Witch Patterns Capulet Dress.

What do you look for in a sewing pattern?

Clearly written instructions are key. I also gravitate towards anything that fills a gap in my wardrobe, and I’m partial to puffy sleeves.

What inspires you to sew?

The satisfaction and confidence I feel wearing something that I made myself is unmatched. I love the process, too; sewing is my time to relax and clear my mind.

How much of your wardrobe is memade?

About 20%, but growing every day. I try to do a mix of fun dresses and everyday basics.

Do you make garments  for anyone other than yourself?

I haven’t yet, but I’m currently working on aprons for my and my boyfriend’s moms for Christmas. I’m hoping that will make me more comfortable with sewing for others, it’s something I’d love to do.

Do you have a favourite Sew Love Patterns make?

My Joelle Dress is so lovely, I’m obsessed with the bow detail. And I love the Springe/Joelle jumpsuit I made as well!

Do you have any sewing tips?

Never be afraid to challenge yourself. I love intimidating patterns that feel above my skill level, because I get to learn something new!
