The Springe Dress Frill Hem Hack modelled by Rosa
Springe Dress Frilled Hem Hack
I just love the dresses that Molby & the Label make, with their colourful fabrics and cute girly vibe.
When I was designing the Springe Dress, I was inspired by their Tilda dress to include a hack so that you could make your own contrast gingham version with central front and back seam.
I’ve been inspired again by Molby & the Label’s Paloma Dress, to make my own version with gorgeous big polka dots and a frilled hem.
If you’d like to make this dress, then grab your copy of the Springe Dress Pdf Sewing Pattern and check out my step-by-step tutorial below for how to make the tiered skirt.

Springe Dress Frill Hem Hack Instructions
How to do it
This fun skirt hack is simple and easy to make and involves making two tiers of gathered panels. To complete the dress, you will need the Springe Dress Pdf Sewing Pattern, which you can buy here.
The total width of the top part of the skirt will be double your waist measurement. And the total width of the frill hem will be double the width of the top part of the skirt.
These instructions are designed for a skirt length of 88cm. If you would like the skirt longer or shorter, then choose your length and divide it into three. The top part of the skirt is 2/3 of the length and the bottom half 1/3 of your length. Then just remember to add seam allowance to each measurement.
STEP 1: Create the pattern piece for the top part of the skirt by measuring a square on your fabric. The width should be the full width of your waist, plus 3cm for the seam allowance.
For example, if your total waist measurement is 70cm, then the width of your square would be 73cm.
The length should be 60cm (which includes seam allowance).
Cut 2 squares to these measurements and then mark a notch about 20cm down from the waistline on one side, for the end of the zip.
STEP 2: Create the pattern piece for the bottom part of the skirt by measuring a rectangle on your fabric. The width should be double the width of your waist, plus 3cm for the seam allowance.
For example, if your total waist measurement is 70cm, then the width of your rectangle would be 143cm.
The length should be 34cm (which includes seam allowance).
Cut 2 rectangles to these measurements.
STEP 3: Finish the edge of each side seam with overlocking or zigzag stitch, and then add two lines of gathering stitch to each top skirt panel.
STEP 4: Finish the edge of each side seam with overlocking or zigzag stitch, and then add two lines of gathering stitch to each frill hem panel. Then pull the gathering threads so that each panel is about half the width.
STEP 5: Sew each frill hem panel to each top skirt panel and finish the edge of the seam.
STEP 6: Sew each front and back skirt panel together at each side seam, remembering to only sew up to the zip end notch on one side. Press open the seam.
STEP 7: To finish the dress, go back to the Springe Dress pattern instruction booklet and follow the steps on page 21 for attaching the skirt to the bodice, adding the zip and hemming.
I hope that you enjoy your Springe Dress Hack - it’s perfect for twirling in!!
